This page
will be a photo journal of the upgrade experience.
When this computer is built it will be a 3.20 GHz quad
core AMD machine with 8 GB of RAM and 3.5 TB of disk
space. This will be a machine for testing new
software and will run five operating systems. I
like building my own machines so I can control the
quality of the components and workmanship and also if I
build them, I can fix them. This computer was
built on September 28th & 29th.
This page might take a while to load as the pictures are
somewhat high resolution - however, once this page loads
you can click on any photograph to see the full-sized
version because once you can see the thumbnail, the
photograph is already on your local hard drive.
This page will allow me to "look inside" the computer in
the future to see how it was built without having to
shut it down and open it up.
This is a bare bones system I bought from Tiger Direct.
First, here is a collection of the parts.
Here are a couple of pictures of the skeleton
Here are two pictures of the case after I added the power
supply, cooling fans, hard drives, and DVD writer.
The next task is to install parts on the motherboard. In
the first two pictures you can see the motherboard and then the
CPU mounted in the socket.
The first picture below shows the CPU cooler installed on the
CPU. The next step is to install the memory.
In the first picture below the motherboard is installed in the
case. In the second picture all the cables were connected
and the computer was tested. As the last step, the cables
are bundled together to improve the appearance and the air flow
through the case. In keeping with tradition, the computer
shown here was used to create this web page showing the computer
being built. (There was a twin of this computer
built in October.)
