I have not posted here in so long, you probably thought I had fallen off the edge of the Earth. Actually, if there ever was anyone looking at this blog you have probably lost interest and at this point no one is ever checking for new updates. That is really sort of cool in a way because now I can post all my thoughts that I never wanted anyone to see, all my innermost secrets. 😆
So much has happened, so little has changed…… (I think that might be from a song.)
I am still married to my wonderful loving wife Pam, still living in the same house in San Tan Valley that I bought in 2007, still driving the same old 2004 Toyota Camry, and still working at the University of Phoenix (UOP).
Everything has changed at UOP in the IT arena, they used to have dedicated departments for Linux/Windows support, DBA, Networking, Software Support (that is where I was), and they had a 24-hour IT Operations Center (ITOC). They did away with all that, it is all gone. The people and knowledge are still there but the departments are history. All IT people are now on (theoretically) cross-functional Agile teams and to get support you need to know what team to contact. It is really all very confusing at this point during this transition phase. In my case as a former support person I will need to gradually move into development which is no big deal for me, I have been developing software since 1983. I wonder though how well some support people will make this transition – and how developers will like the idea of doing customer support. The University is doing better financially and they are bringing the corporate helpdesk back to Phoenix that was previously outsourced to India years ago to save money. This is good news!
How is Persson Technologies going? I wish you had not asked that question. It is going very, very slowly. I have spent years learning everything I can regarding HTML, CSS, WordPress, and Divi and it seems there is always more to learn. My former manager at UOP suggested I offer my services for free at the beginning to get some websites in my portfolio but this has not really worked out well. I have created websites for a number of people but once we get into the design they decide to hire someone else. I am not certain what to think of that or which direction to head with my business now. I really need to get on Upwork and start bidding on jobs.
I have moved Persson Technologies to a new hosting company, SiteGround. Their tools are so cool! 😎 When I signed up and moved my domain they asked if I had a website to automatically move. I was with GoDaddy and had always moved my websites manually. SiteGround gave me a plugin that I installed on my old website and SiteGround transferred all the data over to the new website. It was amazing! I have a total of seven websites over on SiteGround now (including partially completed projects for my portfolio) and right now while I am typing this I am updating all the software on those websites. The PhilPersson.name website is still located on GoDaddy for the time being, until this account expires.
Every Saturday is Persson Technologies Day when I spend time trying to move my business forward. Now that the software updates have completed I need to get back to that but I wanted to quickly get a blog entry out here since it had been so very long since I had typed anything here. Usually I type all my thoughts into Facebook but this should be a place for different thoughts that are not appropriate for Facebook and I am also convinced I am the only one who will ever see this blog. 🙂
